The Niger Delta Development Commission has initiated a program to provide monthly stipends of N50,000 to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta through its Youths Internship Scheme. The Director of Corporate Affairs at the NDDC shared this information during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The beneficiaries will engage in hands-on training within various organizations for a year to enhance their skills.
The scheme was inaugurated on July 31, 2024, with the announcement of the monthly stipend by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The selection process for the beneficiaries has been completed, and they are being placed in organizations to gain practical experience. The payment of the stipends has also commenced.
Over 3.2 million youths registered for the program, from which 10,000 beneficiaries were transparently selected. This overwhelming response showcases the potential and aspirations of the youth in the region to better themselves. The NDDC aims to ensure that this opportunity has a significant impact and leads to a brighter future for the recipients.
The scheme has allowed the commission to gather important data on the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the region’s youth. This data will help in designing tailored programs to address the unique challenges faced by young people. Additionally, the NDDC has collaborated with KPMG, a global audit and consultancy firm, to enhance its corporate governance structure.
The Governance Advisory Report produced by KPMG will support the commission in transitioning from a transaction-based to a transformation-focused approach. The director praised the youths for their patience and cooperation throughout the selection process for the scheme.
