In recent developments, the Kano State Government has taken a strong stand against food adulteration, with a crackdown leading to arrests at the Dawanau International Grains Market. The Commissioner for Commerce, Investment, and Industry issued a stern warning during a visit to the market, where a Task Force seized a significant amount of allegedly adulterated sesame seeds. This illicit practice not only damages the market’s reputation but also poses risks to global commodity trade.
Recognizing the critical role of the Dawanau market in food security and international trade, the government plans to establish a Commodity Exchange Department to enhance oversight and prevent future instances of adulteration. The Chairman of the market expressed support for the crackdown and highlighted efforts to improve infrastructure, despite challenges like electricity shortages.
The Federal Produce Inspection Service has also reiterated its commitment to enforcing market regulations and holding accountable those involved in food adulteration. This decisive action by the Kano State Government underscores its dedication to consumer health, fair trade, and the integrity of Nigeria’s prominent grains market.
