The body of a member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Justice Azuka, was discovered along the 2nd Niger Bridge. Azuka, who was kidnapped 44 days earlier on December 24, 2024, was found decomposing by a joint security team. The tragic incident has shocked residents of Onitsha and its environs.
This unfortunate event marks the second time a serving lawmaker has been abducted and killed by gunmen in Anambra State within three years. The previous incident involved the abduction and subsequent killing of another lawmaker shortly after the swearing-in of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
Following the discovery of Azuka’s body, the police arrested the culprits responsible for his abduction and murder. The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the discovery of the lawmaker’s body, and investigations are ongoing.
The Labour Party caucus of the House of Representatives expressed deep sadness over the loss of their party member. They called on the state governor to address the growing insecurity in Anambra State, which has seen a rise in kidnappings and killings. The federal lawmakers extended their condolences to Azuka’s family, especially his young wife and children, who are now grieving due to this heinous act of violence.
