The Ogoni people from Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme, representing the four local government areas of Ogoniland in Rivers State, have initiated discussions regarding the potential restart of oil production in the region.
A meeting was recently held in Abuja where Ogoni leaders, including Rivers State Governor, engaged in talks concerning the resumption of oil activities. The National Security Adviser was appointed by the President to facilitate these discussions with Ogoni stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of gathering and relaying feedback from the community.
Following this, Ogoni leaders convened at the Peace and Freedom Centre in Bori to communicate the outcomes of their meeting with the authorities.
Despite a delayed start, the gathering attracted a significant number of Ogoni residents. Representatives provided updates on their discussions with the authorities, prompting some youths to express concerns through placards, advocating for transparency in the ongoing dialogue.
Tensions escalated as the event concluded abruptly, with participants leaving amidst murmurs from the attending youths.
A resolution was issued by the Ogoni Dialogue Committee, emphasizing support for the dialogue process between the Ogoni people and the government, stressing the importance of constructive engagement for the benefit of current and future generations.
The resolution urged unity among Ogoni individuals, emphasizing the pursuit of justice, development, and inclusivity in solidarity with the government’s dialogue efforts.
Various Ogoni groups have endorsed the proposed oil resumption, advocating for inclusive participation in the process.
