Plateau State Governor recently reiterated his administration’s resolve to tackle the issue of illegal mining, which is contributing to a concerning rise in school dropouts within mining communities in the state. During a church service in Jos, the governor urged community and religious leaders to collaborate with the government in addressing this pressing matter, emphasizing the severe consequences of illegal mining activities. He highlighted a significant decline in school enrollment in key mining areas and expressed worry over parents resorting to child labor due to the impact of illegal mining.
The governor called on community leaders to educate their people about the dangers of illegal mining, announcing plans for an awareness campaign in partnership with religious organizations to combat the issue. He also emphasized the environmental harm caused by illegal mining, warning of land degradation and threats to residential areas and government facilities.
Regarding security challenges, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the state’s commitment to maintaining peace and preserving its cultural heritage. He stressed the importance of respecting the traditions and institutions of Plateau people while advocating for unity among religious groups to foster development and peace in the region.
