The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress affirmed that no governor possesses the authority to prohibit labor unions, citing that union activity is governed by the Constitution. He expressed concern that many governors are residing in Abuja instead of attending to the needs of their states.
The NLC President criticized the former Kogi State Governor for attempting to proscribe labor unions in state-owned tertiary institutions, emphasizing that unions are registered nationally and governors do not have the jurisdiction to ban them. He also highlighted the absence of governors in various zones, stating that the NLC leadership had encountered only one governor present during their visits.
Furthermore, the NLC President mentioned that the NLC leadership was in Kogi State to deliver Compressed Natural Gas buses to alleviate transportation challenges. He pointed out that workers are facing economic hardships and criticized the consideration of increasing telecom tariffs. The workers in Kogi State expressed grievances, including the prolonged proscription of unions and other issues like salary increments and teacher shortages in schools.
