Bangladesh slams five-year ban on cricketer over corruption

An international cricketer from Bangladesh, Shohely Akhter, has been handed a five-year ban from all cricket by the ICC for admitting to five breaches of the anti-corruption code.

Akhter offered a fellow Bangladeshi player £13,000 ($16,000) to underperform in a Women’s T20 World Cup match in South Africa in 2023.

The incident was reported by the unnamed player, leading to Akhter’s ban despite not participating in the tournament.

Najmul Abedin Fahim, the director of Bangladesh Cricket Board, expressed disappointment over Akhter’s actions, emphasizing the board’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption in cricket.

The 36-year-old spinner had represented Bangladesh in 13 T20 matches and two ODIs, with her last appearance for the national team in 2022.

Among the charges, Akhter also confessed to impeding the investigation into her misconduct.
