Authorities in Mauritius have detained the former Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, and his wife as part of a money-laundering probe. Following raids on the suspects’ homes, stacks of cash were confiscated. Jugnauth’s lawyer stated that he denied the allegations and would appear before a judge. Other suspects, including a leisure company employee and a real estate executive, were found with items linked to the Jugnauths and large sums of cash. The Financial Crimes Commission issued a notice to prevent the suspects from leaving the country. Jugnauth, a prominent figure in Mauritian politics, lost power in recent elections to Navin Ramgoolam. The new government is revisiting negotiations over the Chagos Islands, involving the US and UK in the discussions. Despite the country’s economic growth, addressing the cost of living was a significant issue during the election campaign.
