N’Assembly adjusts 2025 budget, raises recurrent expenditure

The National Assembly recently made adjustments to the 2025 Appropriation Bill, correcting errors in capital and recurrent expenditure line items. Despite the total budget remaining at N54.99 trillion, there was a reduction of over N500 billion in capital expenditure, with a corresponding increase in recurrent expenditure.

During plenary sessions, both the Senate and the House of Representatives revised the figures for various ministries, departments, and agencies. Some figures were increased while others were decreased. The Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, highlighted the need for these corrections due to errors in previously passed figures.

Key adjustments were made to budget estimates for entities such as the Ministries of Defence and Police Affairs, as well as various agencies. Certain departments including the Presidency and several Federal Ministries saw increases in their budget proposals for the 2025 fiscal year.

Waive stressed the House’s responsibility to rectify the identified errors in the document compiled by the Joint Committee. These revisions and approvals would not impact the overall N54.99 trillion budget size.
