Breaking: Microsoft pledges $1M to train 1M Nigerians in AI

Microsoft has unveiled a new initiative to train 1 million Nigerians in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills within the next two years. This program, introduced at an event in Lagos, showcases the company’s commitment to bolstering Africa’s AI ecosystem by empowering young Nigerians with skills vital for the changing global economy.

The initiative will be spearheaded by Microsoft Nigeria in partnership with Tech4Dev, Data Science Nigeria, and other collaborators. Microsoft executives highlight the significant impact AI can have on the continent, positioning the training program as a crucial step towards preparing Africa’s workforce for upcoming job opportunities.

However, concerns have been raised about the project’s ambitious scope of training 1 million individuals with a budget of $1 million, translating to just $1 per trainee. This has led to questions regarding the depth and quality of the training that will be provided.

Details about the structure of the training program have not been fully disclosed by Microsoft. It remains uncertain whether the focus will be on introductory AI awareness, practical technical training, or industry certifications. Olatomiwa Williams, Managing Director of Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, hinted at leveraging previous AI upskilling initiatives in Nigeria for this program.

Microsoft aims to empower Nigerians to seize opportunities arising from the fifth industrial revolution driven by AI. The company’s investment in talent development aligns with its mission to enable individuals and organizations to achieve more.

Moreover, Microsoft has a history of collaborating with Nigerian AI startups and claims to have impacted 4 million Nigerians through its digital skills programs since entering the country.

The tech giant is not alone in investing in Nigeria’s AI potential. Google also made a significant grant to support AI talent development in Nigeria, part of its broader commitment to enhancing digital skills across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Microsoft views AI as a crucial driver of economic growth in Africa, with the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s GDP and the continent’s economy by 2050.

As the initiative progresses, Microsoft’s strategic interests are also at play. The company stands to benefit from a larger pool of skilled professionals in AI, potentially becoming future customers or employees. Additionally, the initiative could drive adoption of Microsoft’s AI tools and cloud services among Nigerian developers and businesses.
