The government has expressed a desire to upgrade most electricity consumers in Nigeria to Band A, offering them a minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily. This was revealed alongside the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s announcement of a new peak power generation of 5,543.20 megawatts, surpassing the previous record. The achievement was highlighted in a statement by the company’s management.
In addition to the peak generation milestone, TCN also noted a significant breakthrough in energy distribution, setting a new Maximum Daily Energy record. This progress ensured efficient transmission of power to distribution companies for widespread consumer access.
The government’s focus on moving consumers to Band A was reiterated by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Energy, emphasizing plans to provide electricity to underserved communities. The aim is to meter all customers for consumption monitoring, enhance cash flow for investments, and improve the viability of the sector for the benefit of both distribution companies and consumers.
Efforts to increase distribution capacity, reliability, and access were emphasized, with the goal of elevating most customers to Band A status for improved service levels. The need for diversification in gas usage due to financial challenges in the power sector was also highlighted, stressing the importance of sustainable cash flows for sector development.
