The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a stern warning to fruit vendors against the use of calcium carbide to ripen fruits for sale. The caution was given by the NAFDAC Coordinator in Sokoto state during a public campaign at a local fruit market. The NAFDAC official emphasized the dangers and health risks associated with using calcium carbide, including kidney damage, cancer, hypertension, and other severe illnesses. Fruit sellers were urged to discontinue the harmful practice, especially with the upcoming Ramadan season when fruit consumption typically increases. The coordinator clarified that only welders are authorized to use calcium carbide for specific tasks, and NAFDAC would intensify monitoring to prevent its misuse. The Chairman of the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Marketers and Distributors in Sokoto echoed the importance of adopting safe and hygienic fruit ripening methods to protect consumers. He also highlighted alternative safe methods for ripening fruits in commercial quantities without endangering public health. The awareness campaign, which began on Feb. 18, has been engaging with market vendors to address these issues.
