NERC stresses consumers’ rights to reliable power supply, accurate billing

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has introduced a customer bill of rights and obligations for consumers in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. This new framework, based on the Electricity Act 2023, outlines the fundamental rights of customers, such as access to reliable electricity, accurate billing, resolution of complaints, transparent contracts, data privacy, and protection from unfair practices.

According to an official statement from NERC, customers are entitled to clear information on electricity rates, service terms, and connection procedures. The bill also specifies certain obligations for customers, including timely payment of bills, facilitating meter installation and maintenance, ensuring safety compliance, and reporting any unauthorized use or meter tampering.

Consumers are advised to inform their respective distribution companies (DisCos) before moving in or out of a premises to avoid liabilities from unpaid bills. NERC stressed that these customer protection regulations aim to align Nigeria’s electricity service standards with global best practices and encouraged consumers to understand their rights and duties to promote transparency and accountability in the electricity market.
