UK records over 100,000 asylum requests in 2024 — Report

In 2024, the United Kingdom experienced a significant increase in immigration, with a record-high number of over 100,000 asylum applications received. The UK Home Office reported a surge to 108,000 applications, surpassing the previous peak in 2022. This rise has led to strains on accommodation facilities, with a notable increase in asylum seekers housed in hotels by the end of December.

The EU Settlement Scheme, aimed at securing residency for EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens in the UK post-Brexit, has also seen continuous activity, with millions of applications concluded by the end of 2024. Additionally, deportations have increased since the new government took office, reflecting a tougher stance on illegal migration.

Despite the high number of asylum applications, there was a 37% decline in work visa approvals in 2024 compared to the previous year. This decline, particularly affecting sectors like health and social care, is attributed to stricter immigration policies. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised further reforms to prioritize training British workers over relying on foreign labor, aiming to create a system that benefits the economy while reducing overall migration.

Furthermore, the transition to digital eVisas by the Home Office has faced delays, leaving many residents without updated documentation. The government extended the validity of physical documents to allow more time for residents to register for eVisas. As the UK government works on tightening immigration controls, finding a balance between economic needs and migration policies remains a challenge, especially with the contrasting trends of rising asylum applications and deportations alongside declining work visa approvals.
