A significant financial agreement was signed between the African Development Bank Group and Standard Bank Group to boost funding for small, medium, and micro enterprises and facilitate trade expansion within Africa.
The agreement includes a substantial investment in a social bond and a Risk Participation Agreement to enhance lending capabilities, particularly for SMMEs in South Africa, which play a crucial role in economic growth and job creation.
The investment in the social bond aims to support thousands of businesses with turnover and loan size criteria, aiding in their growth, job creation, and overall economic resilience.
The collaboration was praised by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Standard Bank Group and Chief Executive Officer of SBSA, emphasizing the importance of supporting SMMEs and ensuring financial inclusion in the economy.
Apart from the social bond investment, the Risk Participation Agreement enhances trade finance across Africa, with a focus on low-income countries and transition states, promoting intra-African trade and reducing the trade finance gap.
The Director-General for Southern Africa at the African Development Bank highlighted the milestone achieved through the partnership, emphasizing the shared commitment to supporting SMMEs and enhancing trade finance in Africa for economic transformation and regional integration.
The collaboration aligns with the African Development Bank’s long-term strategy, focusing on industrialization, regional integration, and improving living standards in Africa, as well as Standard Bank’s Sustainable Finance Framework for green and inclusive growth.
The Director of the Financial Sector Development Department at the African Development Bank expressed pride in the initiative, emphasizing the commitment to sustainable financing and creating economic opportunities and resilience for businesses.
The significance of the collaboration was reiterated by Kenny Fihla, emphasizing the positive impact of providing capital to enterprises and driving economic and social change through collaborative efforts in Africa.
