Airlines protest N’Assembly’s knocks over old aircraft

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation expressed concern about the prevalence of old aircraft in Nigeria’s aviation industry compared to developed nations. Despite this, industry stakeholders argued that the focus should be on maintaining aircraft rather than their age. This discussion took place during a stakeholders’ engagement event in Lagos, where various issues related to the aviation sector were addressed.

The Senator emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and maintenance in the industry, urging stakeholders to act in the best interests of Nigerians. The Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority supported this view by highlighting that proper maintenance, not age, determines the airworthiness of an aircraft.

The Vice President of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria emphasized that Nigeria boasts one of the youngest aircraft fleets globally. He pointed out that while some foreign airlines operate older aircraft, they maintain them well, creating a perception of newer planes. The Managing Director of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria mentioned a discussion about installing internet services throughout the airport passenger areas.

In a separate statement, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development pledged to support local airlines and enhance local content in the industry.
