The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Zamfara State to address the growing issue of banditry in the region. This call came after a motion presented by a lawmaker highlighted the security crisis in Shinkafi and Zurmi Local Government Areas, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures.
The state government in Zamfara has already implemented various strategies to combat the security challenges, including setting up a Security Trust Fund and deploying Community Protection Guards. However, the ongoing attacks have severely affected the local communities, leading to disruptions in daily activities such as farming and schooling.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the withdrawal of military troops from the area, which allowed bandits to regroup and launch more attacks. To address this, the House recommended the establishment of a well-equipped military base in several communities within the affected areas.
Additionally, the House called for collaboration between security agencies, the Zamfara State Government, and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to address the crisis and provide relief to displaced victims. Meanwhile, in Katsina State, efforts are being made to rescue students abducted by bandits, highlighting the persistent security challenges faced in certain regions despite intervention efforts.
