Bamise: Court reserves judgment on BRT driver’s rape, murder case

In a recent development at the Lagos State High Court, the judgment has been reserved in a case involving a Bus Rapid Transit driver accused of raping and murdering a 22-year-old fashion designer in 2022. The court is set to deliver its decision on May 2, 2025, after both the prosecution and defense presented their final arguments.

The defense counsel argued that there was insufficient evidence linking the defendant to the crimes, noting the lack of direct testimonies implicating the accused. Additionally, they disputed the admissibility of a voice note and challenged the prosecution’s reliance on certain legal doctrines.

On the other hand, the Director of Public Prosecutions urged the court to find the defendant guilty based on specific witness testimonies and highlighted the defendant’s suspicious behavior following the incident. The prosecution emphasized that corroboration is not mandatory in cases of rape under Nigerian law and cited relevant legal provisions.

The defendant is facing charges of conspiracy, rape, and murder related to the tragic incident that occurred on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway. Despite the allegations, the accused has pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him.
