Merchants of death: Inside NAFDAC’s battle against fake drug cartels

Officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control have shared insights into their efforts to combat the spread of illicit drugs and harmful products within the country. These officials, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted harrowing experiences during raids on counterfeit drug merchants.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, expressed concerns about the threats to her life following recent agency operations. She emphasized the need for stringent penalties against those involved in the distribution of fake drugs, labeling them as purveyors of death endangering millions of lives.

A significant crackdown by NAFDAC led to the confiscation of a large quantity of substandard and expired medical products valued at over N1 trillion. This operation, spanning major drug markets in Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba, resulted in the agency’s largest seizure in history.

Despite these successes, Adeyeye highlighted the personal risks involved in her role, necessitating round-the-clock police protection. The challenges faced by NAFDAC workers were also underscored by the Secretary of the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria, NAFDAC branch, who pointed out the hazards encountered by field officers.

To survive attacks during raids, enforcement officials implement safety measures such as maintaining secrecy about their movements, taking different routes, and avoiding predictable patterns. Despite these precautions, incidents like being trailed during enforcement tasks or encountering violent resistance remain a constant threat.

The lack of adequate resources, including logistics and funding, poses significant constraints in the fight against counterfeit products. With NAFDAC being understaffed, the efficiency of operations is compromised, requiring extensive measures to compensate for the shortfall.

The dangerous working conditions and risks faced by NAFDAC staff underscore the urgent need for enhanced compensation and security measures. The collaboration with security agencies plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of enforcement personnel during operations.
