The Ijaw National Congress has made an appeal to President Bola Tinubu concerning recent comments attributed to the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, regarding the Ijaw people. The INC expressed concern over statements suggesting the Ijaw were a minority in the South South region, except in Bayelsa. They emphasized the need for peace and stability while urging President Tinubu to intervene and refocus the minister on his duties.
The INC highlighted the historical significance and population size of the Ijaw people, stating that they are the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria with a rich history. They also clarified that the Ijaw are not a minority in Rivers or Delta states and have been strong advocates for fairness and equity in the Niger Delta region. The INC emphasized their commitment to maintaining harmony in the region and their resilience against provocations.
The INC’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, underlined the importance of accurate understanding and representation of the Ijaw people, especially given their cultural and demographic significance. The INC’s stance reflects their dedication to upholding the rights and recognition of the Ijaw community in Nigeria.
