The Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria recently hosted its 2025 inter-house sports competition in Lagos, showcasing exceptional sporting abilities and athleticism among students associated with the organization. The event, which took place at Ansarudeen Grammar School in Surulere, Lagos, welcomed participants from special and conventional schools.
Besides the impressive athletic performances, the competition served as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities. Nike Denis, the National Administrator of the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria, emphasized the importance of social integration through such events.
The foundation’s National President, Rose Mordi, highlighted the ongoing struggle to establish appropriate support structures for individuals with intellectual disabilities, noting the lack of government initiatives in this area. Mordi expressed satisfaction with the increased parental involvement, which contributes to a sense of belonging for the children.
Support from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), led by Bunmi Sosina, and corporate partners like Linkage Assurance and NSIA Insurance further enhanced the success of the event. The inter-house sports featured various activities such as march past, sack race, 100m and 50m races, tug of war, and relay races, involving students from different schools.
Following a spirited competition, Red House emerged as the champions, narrowly defeating Yellow House, with Blue House securing the third position. This event not only celebrated sporting achievements but also promoted inclusivity and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
