A telecom operator and a fibre company are heading to court in July 2025 to challenge a decision that has halted their fibre expansion plans for over three years.

The telecom operator initially announced its intention to acquire a stake in the fibre company in 2021 to extend its fibre network. Despite initial approval from the telecom regulator, the deal faced obstacles later on due to competition concerns.

The regulatory body eventually blocked the deal, prompting the telecom operator and the fibre company to appeal the decision. Their appeal led to a lengthy hearing, culminating in the decision to bring the matter to court in July 2025.

Delays in mergers in the country are common due to various regulatory and competition issues. The telecom firms argue that such delays hinder infrastructure growth and investment, while regulators defend them as necessary to maintain market fairness.

Both companies are hopeful for a positive outcome in court as they seek to strengthen their positions in the market and expand their networks. The result of the court case will have a significant impact on the telecom industry in the country, potentially leading to further industry consolidation or setting a precedent against unchecked corporate deals.
