A’Ibom CP orders probe into alleged police brutality, extortion at polytechnic

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into claims of police misconduct and extortion made by students of the State Polytechnic, Ikot-Osura, located in Ikot-Ekpene Local Government Area. Following a meeting between the police commissioner and the student union leadership, the directive for the investigation was issued.

The students had organized a protest at the main gate of the institution to voice their concerns about increasing insecurity and alleged harassment by security personnel. Led by the Student Union President, Geoffrey George, the students gathered with placards bearing messages like “End Police Brutality Now” and “Protect, Save, Don’t Abuse.”

In response to the students’ grievances, CP Azare reiterated the police command’s dedication to upholding human rights and assured that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures. He emphasized the importance of fostering better relations between the police and students through peaceful dialogue.

The commissioner underscored the significance of cooperation between students and security agencies and mentioned proactive steps being taken to enhance safety and reduce crime in the community. He pledged to maintain high policing standards to safeguard lives and property under his leadership.
