The current Governor of Edo State recently expressed intentions to investigate the alleged $10 million expenditure by the previous governor on the state-owned newspaper, The Nigerian Observer. During an impromptu visit to the Observer’s premises, Governor Monday Okpebholo and his team were unable to access the buildings where the purchased machines were supposed to be kept. The newspaper had been closed down by the former governor with plans to revamp it for national competition. Governor Okpebholo, disappointed by the lack of access, promised to return for further inspection to confirm the existence of the equipment bought with public funds. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability, stating that the people of Edo State deserve to know how their money was used.
