How drunk policeman killed my son, Niger widow cries out

A woman, a widow for 11 years with nine children, has accused the Niger State Police of killing her 27-year-old son, Sani Khalid, in what she described as a tragic incident. The event took place in the Angwa-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna, Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State, where the family resided before Khalid’s untimely death.

The widow narrated that on that fateful night, while she and her children were asleep, Khalid went outside to get some fresh air due to the hot weather. Suddenly, the sound of a police patrol vehicle and gunshots startled her. Rushing outside, she found Khalid lying lifeless near a local shop. Despite her efforts to wake him, it was clear that he had been fatally shot.

Devastated, the widow shared her grief, explaining how Khalid was the main provider for the family after her husband’s passing. Witnesses in the community revealed that the police officer responsible for the shooting seemed to be intoxicated, as he not only shot Khalid but also targeted the shop owner.

The community members expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing that Khalid was unarmed and posed no threat. They condemned the actions of the police officer and demanded justice for the senseless killing.

When visited by locals offering condolences, the widow, surrounded by Muslim women, mourned her loss. The police spokesperson confirmed the incident, attributing Khalid’s death to a stray bullet during a confrontation with unruly youths in the area. The police assured that an investigation would be conducted to identify the officer responsible for the fatal shooting.
