Despite experiencing sudden blindness in June 2023, a 28-year-old man named Nelson Ayuba Maina from Gombe State remains resolute in creating a meaningful life for himself.
In an interview, Maina shared his story of resilience and hope. He recounted how he lost his sight due to a mysterious condition that doctors have been unable to diagnose despite various treatments.
He explained, “I developed a fever that caused the rapid loss of my vision within 24 hours. Prior to this, I had no eye-related health issues, and my family has no history of glaucoma.”
Despite the challenges, Maina expressed determination to adapt to his new reality. He has started learning braille and is progressing well in reading and writing with it.
Maina shared his goal of becoming self-sufficient and providing for his family. He aims to acquire computer skills, a laptop, and an Android phone to aid in his education.
He appealed to local leaders for support in securing job opportunities, emphasizing his desire to contribute positively to society as a Public Health graduate.
Maina highlighted, “I consider the greatest disability to be of the mind and death. My blindness is a minor obstacle, and I am optimistic about building a fulfilling life ahead.”
