Alia fumes as bandits kill two soldiers, others in Benue

Bandits have once again attacked two communities in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including two soldiers. The state government has strongly condemned this violent act and expressed deep sorrow for the victims.

Residents reported that the communities of Mgbaigbe and Mbaitye, situated near the Turan headquarters in Jato Acka, were targeted by the bandits in a coordinated assault. These criminals ambushed the soldiers who were conducting surveillance in the area.

Multiple villages in Turan land, including Moon, Mbaikyor, Mbadura, Kumakwagh, and Yaav, have recently faced similar attacks, forcing inhabitants to seek shelter in Jato Acka to ensure their safety.

Iorbee Ihagh, the President-General of Mdzou U Tiv Worldwide, verified the incident and urged the people of Benue to be prepared to defend themselves against future assaults. He expressed concerns about the increasing presence of Fulani herders in the region and emphasized the need for protection against their encroachment.

While acknowledging Governor Hyacinth Alia’s development initiatives in the state, Ihagh called for more robust measures to safeguard lives and property. He advocated for a return to traditional defense methods, citing historical successes of the Tiv people against the Fulanis during the jihad war.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Internal Affairs, Joe Har, confirmed the attack but mentioned difficulties in reaching the military commander for detailed information. Similarly, the Benue Police Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, did not provide confirmation of the attack, indicating ongoing crisis management in Kwande.

Despite the lack of official confirmation, the state government verified the deaths of the two soldiers during a State Executive Council meeting, where Deputy Governor Sam Ode expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss. The soldiers were killed while fulfilling their duty to protect civilians in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area.
