Chairman of the Lekki Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Bamidele Kasali, has warned community members to shun violence against women, adding that offenders will face prosecution.
Kasali gave the warning on Wednesday, in a separate interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lekki.
According to him, the note of warning had become necessary, following an increased spate of domestic violence and the molestation of the girl-child in society.
He said that any individual found culpable of such acts would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Kasali urged residents to uphold moral values and promote a culture of respect, dignity and protection for women and children within their homes and communities.
He urged community leaders, religious institutions and relevant stakeholders to intensify advocacy and sensitisation campaigns against all forms of abuse.
Besides, he urged victims and witnesses of domestic violence to promptly report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.
He assured the council’s continued collaboration with security agencies to ensure justice and safeguard vulnerable members of the community.
“Many cases of child abuse and domestic violence leading to death have been recorded across society, which is discouraging.
“There is a need to put an end to domestic violence and girl-child abuse at the grassroots, ” he said.
He said that the council would continue to partner with both the Federal and Lagos state ministries, civil society organisations and relevant stakeholders, on awareness and sensitisation programmes
He expressed optimism that the programmes will help to curb domestic violence and child abuse at the grassroots level.
