A group of resident doctors from the National Hospital in Abuja conducted a peaceful demonstration to demand the release of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted in December last year. The doctors carried placards with messages urging for her safe return. Similar protests were also held by resident doctors at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Ogun State.
Dr. Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, was kidnapped along with her husband and nephew. Despite efforts and negotiations, she and her nephew remain in captivity. The doctors expressed concern over her prolonged absence and called on the government to intensify rescue efforts.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) gave the Federal Government a deadline to secure Dr. Popoola’s release, threatening to go on an indefinite strike if she is not rescued by a certain date. The ARD President at the National Hospital emphasized the urgency of rescuing Dr. Popoola and urged the authorities to intervene promptly.
The doctors stressed the importance of government intervention in securing the release of Dr. Popoola and emphasized the need for immediate action. They highlighted the risks faced by healthcare workers and pleaded for swift measures to ensure the safe return of abducted individuals. The protests aimed to draw attention to the plight of Dr. Popoola, emphasizing the urgency of her rescue.
