Aviation workers halt planned protest over revenue slash

Workers in the aviation industry have made the decision to call off their planned protest against the Federal Government’s request for 50 percent revenue collection from the agencies.

The strike that was set to take place today has been canceled.

The Secretary of the Joint Aviation Trade Unions Forum, Nnadi Hector, mentioned that the protest was suspended following a government directive aimed at addressing tensions in the aviation sector.

Hector explained the purpose of recent protests by aviation unions, stressing their peaceful nature in raising awareness about the industry’s challenges.

“Aviation is a service industry worldwide; graciously, the President intervened, although we have not received a formal letter,” Hector commented, referring to the presidential instruction.

“While he was out of the country, he instructed that the revenue deduction be reduced to 20 percent. This is a positive step forward.”

It is worth noting that a week ago, aviation workers across Nigeria had planned a nationwide protest starting on August 21, 2024, in response to the Federal Government’s consistent deduction of 50 percent from the internally generated revenue of major aviation agencies.

The unions had communicated this decision in a letter dated August 14, 2024, titled, “Save Aviation From Collapse”.
