CJN: Lawyers list expectations for Kekere-Ekun

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the judiciary as Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun assumes the role of Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, instilling a sense of hope among legal practitioners. She is set to become the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, succeeding Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who recently retired upon reaching the age of 70.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination by the National Judicial Council was approved at their recent meeting, paving the way for her potential appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. With a career spanning various levels of the judiciary, she brings a wealth of experience to her new position.

As she steps into this significant role, there are high expectations for Justice Kekere-Ekun to address the challenges facing the judiciary, including issues of corruption and the need for reform. Legal experts and practitioners have voiced their support and offered suggestions on how she can lead the judiciary towards a more efficient and effective future.

Suggestions include reducing the number of cases reaching the Supreme Court, introducing stricter conditions for granting appeals, and enhancing the use of technology in court proceedings. It is hoped that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership will bring about positive changes and restore public confidence in the Nigerian judiciary.
