The National Broadcasting Commission recently announced a significant expansion of digital television coverage across Nigeria. This initiative, fueled by a N10bn grant approved by the President, is set to revolutionize broadcasting in the country. The Director General of the NBC, Charles Ebuebu, shared that while Digital Terrestrial Television services are already operational in eight states, the upcoming phase will utilize satellite technology to reach every part of Nigeria.
The grant of N10bn, a crucial step in this ambitious plan, signifies the beginning of a comprehensive effort to transition Nigeria to full digital broadcasting. This move is part of a broader strategy by the Federal Government to reinvigorate the Digital Switch-Over project, which has encountered challenges since its launch in 2016. The transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, which commenced in Jos, Plateau State, has faced obstacles along the way. However, the recent financial support aims to address these challenges and expedite the nationwide rollout.
The NBC Director General emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating that the new satellite coverage will ensure access to broadcasting services across the entire nation simultaneously. With the initial N10bn funding from the President, the project is poised to kick-start this transformative process. More details on this groundbreaking development will be revealed in the future.
