The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Obot, has directed the release of 44 inmates, including two females, from correctional facilities in the state’s three senatorial districts. The inmates were freed during the chief judge’s initial inspection visit to the correctional centers this year.
Justice Obot reviewed the cases of the inmates and noted that many of them had minor offenses and had been held in custody for extended periods without trial. The offenses varied from theft of palm fruits and cassava to assault and fighting. Some inmates were released on compassionate and health grounds.
For instance, Otuekong Essien, accused of stealing cassava tubers and suffering from health issues, was released on health grounds. Another inmate, Shadrach Hanson, who had spent over a year in custody for stealing a cooking pot, was also set free with a warning to maintain good behavior.
In cases where files could not be found, like that of Kufre Sylvester accused of cultism and conspiracy, the CJ ordered their unconditional release to avoid violating their fundamental rights.
Justice Obot emphasized the importance of decongesting correctional facilities while ensuring that individuals convicted of violent and major crimes remain incarcerated. She urged the authorities to prioritize the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates by providing education and skills training. The CJ also suggested the establishment of schools within the facilities to offer teenage inmates opportunities for a better future.
The Controller of Corrections, Julius Ezegwu, expressed gratitude for the CJ’s visit and called for improvements in the facilities and vehicles. Justice Obot’s advocacy for a holistic approach to inmate rehabilitation, including education and vocational training, aims to equip them for a positive reintegration into society.
