The Gombe chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has agreed to hold off on discussing an N70,000 new minimum wage until the National Minimum Wage table is released. This decision was revealed by the Gombe NLC Chairman, Yusuf Aish, after a meeting at the Deputy Governor’s office. Aish also mentioned that the ongoing N10,000 palliative for civil servants will continue until further notice.
Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau emphasized the governor’s commitment to implementing the N70,000 minimum wage. He highlighted that the current N10,000 palliative was introduced to support civil servants in light of subsidy removal and expressed that the governor has been paying a minimum wage of N40,000, which surpasses the national minimum wage requirement.
Jatau reassured that the state government is prepared to implement the new minimum wage and explained the process of paying the actual salary separately from the N10,000 palliative to help workers differentiate between the two payments. He stressed the importance of clarity in salary disbursements to align with the upcoming wage increase.
