Obasanjo, Odinga, others attend FESTAC Africa Festival opening ceremony

The highly anticipated FESTAC Africa Festival commenced on a positive note in Kisumu County, Kenya, on Monday, August 26, 2024. The opening ceremony, held at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, was graced by various dignitaries, including former President of Nigeria, a former Prime Minister of Kenya, and the Governor of Kisumu County.

The event began with vibrant performances by cultural groups and artists from different African countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Artists like Les Wanyika, Burundi Dancers, and Benny Willis Wallace entertained the guests.

During the event, the Chairman of FESTAC Africa International emphasized the importance of African unity and solidarity. Former President Obasanjo also shared sentiments of nostalgia as he recalled the history of the festival and its significance in promoting African culture and heritage.

The festival featured various activities like movie screenings, sports, games, tree planting, and health screenings. Additionally, there were exhibitions showcasing African arts and crafts.

The festival’s schedule included a diverse range of events, from special projects like ‘Dinner in the Dark’ to trade summits, cultural performances, fashion shows, and movie screenings. The highlight of the festival was the Africa Gala Dinner and Awards Night, where individuals contributing to African tourism were recognized.
