UDUTH doctors join seven-day strike over colleague’s abduction

Doctors at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, have joined a one-week warning strike initiated by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

Dr Uzairu Abdullahi, the chairman of the association at the hospital, confirmed their participation in the strike.

The strike was called in response to the abduction of one of their colleagues, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped almost eight months ago.

The President of NARD, Dr Dele Abdullahi, announced that the strike would commence at 12 am on Monday, August 26, 2024.

Abdullahi mentioned that their members have joined doctors nationwide in the strike to demand the immediate rescue of Dr Ganiyat Popoola from her captors.

He emphasized the need for the government and security agencies to prioritize her case.

Dr Ganiyat Popoola, a staff of Kaduna Eye Centre, was abducted alongside her husband eight months ago, with her still in captivity.

NARD had previously organized peaceful protests in federal hospitals, urging authorities to rescue Dr Popoola.

If their colleague is not rescued by August 26, NARD members plan to proceed with a seven-day warning strike to enforce their demands.

Earlier, the association had given the government a two-week ultimatum to secure the release of their kidnapped members.
