Falconets lose to Mexico in W’Cup preparatory game

In a recent match in Bogota, Nigeria’s under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, faced off against Mexico’s team and lost 0-1. The game, held at Club Banco de la República in Colombia, was part of their preparations for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. Mexico secured the only goal of the match in the 15th minute with a volley by Alejandra Lomelí.

Following this defeat, Falconets’ head coach, Christopher Danjuma, emphasized the importance of the friendly matches in refining the team’s strategies and gauging their readiness for the tournament. Despite the loss to Mexico, Danjuma expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness, highlighting their previous victories and the valuable experience gained from international friendlies.

Looking ahead to the World Cup finals, Danjuma acknowledged the challenging competition that lies ahead, particularly facing strong opponents like Korea Republic and Germany in the initial matches. He stressed the significance of being physically, mentally, and psychologically prepared for the rigorous tournament.

Nigeria is grouped with Germany, Venezuela, and Korea Republic in Group D of the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from September 2 to September 22. The team will kick off their campaign against Korea Republic, followed by matches against Germany and Venezuela.

As the defending champions, Spain claimed victory in the previous edition of the competition held in Costa Rica in 2022.
