The Nigeria Immigration Service recently deported a Zimbabwean bishop, Eben Nhiwatawi, for reportedly participating in the Methodist Church leadership election process while holding a tourist visa in Nigeria.
The Media Advisor to the Prelate for the Methodist Church Nigeria, Rev. Dapo Daramola, expressed surprise at the news, stating that the church was not aware of Bishop Nhiwatawi’s involvement as they did not hold any elections or programs in Adamawa State.
Daramola clarified that the Zimbabwean bishop was not associated with the Methodist Church Nigeria and had not been invited by them. He emphasized that the Methodist Church Nigeria is distinct from the United Methodist Church, underlining their autonomy since 1962.
The NIS issued a statement through its Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, highlighting that the bishop’s actions violated the terms of his tourist visa, leading to his apprehension in Yola, Adamawa State, on August 24, 2024. Consequently, the Comptroller General ordered his immediate repatriation.
The NIS affirmed its commitment to upholding immigration laws to safeguard national security and promote lawful activities while deterring violations.
