In July, the Nigeria Customs Service, Kwara Area Command, revealed that it intercepted 1,153 parcels of marijuana valued at N57.6m. Additionally, from January to June of the same year, the command collected N13.3bn as revenue. The Customs Area Controller, Faith Ojeifo, made this known in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Chado Zakari.
The interception of the contraband took place along Yamboa Axis of Bukuro, under Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on July 3, 2024. The marijuana was concealed in compartments of a DAF Truck with registration number T-25750-LA. The driver abandoned the truck during a search, prompting further investigation. The truck, valued at N21.5m, will be forfeited in accordance with the Customs Service Act, 2023.
Furthermore, 110 kegs of petrol equivalent to 2,750 liters worth N550,000 were seized. Perishable and inflammable products were auctioned off as required by law, with proceeds remitted to the government. The total value of seized items during this period was N42.7m.
Despite challenges like fuel scarcity, smuggling attempts persist. Collaboration with agencies like the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency is crucial in combating such activities. The Customs Service remains committed to enhancing efforts and partnerships to curb smuggling across borders and within the country.
