The Lagos State Government, represented by the Office of Disability Affairs, emphasized the importance of supporting children with disabilities. This message was conveyed during the 2024 celebration of Special Needs Children in Lagos, which took place at the Abayomi Finnih Recreational Park in Ikeja. The event centered around the theme of “Every Child With Disability Deserves Inclusive and Quality Living.”
Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, the General Manager of the Office of Disability Affairs, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the holistic care of children with disabilities. She emphasized the need to celebrate the unique needs of these children rather than marginalize them. Oyetunde-Lawal pointed out the various challenges faced by children with disabilities in accessing education, healthcare, social inclusion, and basic dignity due to societal barriers and prejudices.
She stressed the importance of shifting societal mindsets to view these children as integral members deserving of equal rights, opportunities, and respect. Inclusivity was highlighted as a key factor in fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding, enabling every child to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
The government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, affirmed its dedication to supporting special needs children to create an inclusive society where they can thrive like any other child. At the event, resource persons such as a psychologist and a therapist provided insights on effectively meeting the unique needs of children with disabilities.
Previously, medical professionals and child development experts advocated for increased support for children with special needs during the YBC reunion event organized by the 2002 alumni of the University of Lagos College of Medicine. They expressed concerns over discriminatory practices against these children.
