The National Economic Council has issued a warning to states that have not yet submitted their reports on the establishment of state police. President Bola Tinubu had expressed support for the idea of state police to tackle the increasing insecurity in the country, as proposed by state governors. States were given instructions to submit their reports for review and action by the NEC.
During a recent NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting Oyo State Governor, Bayo Lawal, revealed that four states had failed to submit their reports as required. The NEC has set a deadline until Monday for these states to comply with the submission or face the consequences of the council’s decision. The states involved are Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory.
Lawal highlighted the importance of establishing state police to address security challenges in various regions of the country. He emphasized that the NEC had previously requested states to submit their considerations on the matter. The council’s decision regarding the establishment of state police will be binding on states that fail to submit their reports by the specified deadline.
