The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria expressed strong disapproval and concern regarding the recent increase in the pump price of petrol, urging the government to reverse the decision promptly.
In a statement released by its President, Festus Osifo, the TUC argued that the sudden rise in fuel and electricity prices will deepen poverty levels, exacerbate hardships, and potentially lead to social unrest.
The organization criticized the lack of consultation with key stakeholders before implementing the price hike, emphasizing the negative impact it will have on the working class and the general population.
The TUC highlighted the widespread anxiety and discontent caused by the surge in petrol prices, especially in the midst of existing economic challenges faced by citizens.
In addition to the petrol price increase, the TUC expressed alarm over the significant spike in electricity tariffs, which disproportionately affect the most vulnerable members of society.
The Congress questioned the unequal distribution of economic burdens, with ordinary Nigerians bearing the brunt of rising living costs while those in power enjoy increased privileges.
Furthermore, the TUC criticized the government for failing to implement cost-saving measures or policies that would enhance the country’s economic stability and improve citizens’ quality of life.
The Congress reiterated its longstanding recommendations for strengthening the Naira and enhancing the overall economic situation, emphasizing the urgency of taking concrete actions to address the root causes of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
