Counter-terrorism centre boss seeks drug regulation to curb insurgency

The National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, within the Office of the National Security Adviser, emphasized the importance of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in regulating the production, importation, and distribution of drugs and controlled substances to combat terrorism and organized crime. This statement was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations in Abuja.

The National Coordinator highlighted the crucial role NAFDAC plays in preventing terrorism and crime by overseeing the manufacturing and distribution of substances that can be misused. He also praised NAFDAC’s efforts in controlling the illegal drug trade, which often funds criminal activities.

In addition, he acknowledged NAFDAC’s work in monitoring the use of chemicals, seeking collaboration from stakeholders to disrupt illicit networks and cut off funding sources for criminals. The collaboration between the NCTC and NAFDAC aims to strengthen efforts in combating these criminal networks and protecting communities from the threats of terrorism.

The Director General of NAFDAC expressed optimism about the MoU, emphasizing its potential to reduce deaths and prevent young people from falling victim to substance abuse. She highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse on mental health and reiterated her agency’s commitment to working with the NCTC to prevent substance abuse in the country.
