FHA cracks down on unauthorised buildings in Lagos, Abuja

The Federal Housing Authority has revealed its plans to tackle unauthorized constructions and irregular property developments in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to enforce its building regulations. This crackdown will impact various estates in both areas.

In a recent press statement, the FHA announced its intention to start regularizing property documents for individuals who have constructed buildings without proper approval or have strayed from the original plans. The initiative aims to provide allottees in FHA estates in these regions, who have engaged in unauthorized practices like altering prototype houses, deviating from approved building plans, or unauthorized land annexations, the opportunity to rectify their property documents.

Estate communities in Lagos such as Festac Town, Gowon Estate, Isheri Olofin 1 and 2, Satellite 2 Navy Town, Egan, and Esuti areas are among those affected. Similarly, in Abuja, estates like Gwarinpa, Lugbe, Kubwa, Maitama, Asokoro, Karu, and Apo/Guzape are also under scrutiny.

Affected individuals have been urged to visit specified FHA offices to regularize their property documents. For those in Lagos, the office of the Zonal Manager, FHA South West Zone at Festac Town Lagos, and for those in Abuja, the office of the Executive Director, Estate Services at the Head Office in Asokoro, Abuja are the designated locations for this purpose.

The FHA has cautioned that enforcement actions will be taken against non-compliant property owners once the notices issued through radio announcements have expired.
