The prolonged interrogation of the Nigeria Labour Congress President by the Department of State Services was focused on a British national who was wanted for allegedly funding a recent protest. The police claimed the Briton supported the protest to destabilize the government. The Briton had a bookshop at the NLC headquarters in Abuja, leading to suspicions of a connection with the NLC President. After being detained at the airport, the NLC President was questioned for over 15 hours before being released. The DSS later handed back his passport through legal assistance. Despite claims of terrorism financing, pressure from the NLC and legal representatives led to his release. Former Vice President Atiku criticized the government for what he perceived as increasing oppression, citing the NLC President’s arrest as an example.
