In response to recent events, a spokesperson from the Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) announced plans to take legal action against the Federal Government. The Deputy Director emphasized their commitment to upholding the public interest by filing a lawsuit at the Federal High Court. This decision comes after the Department of State Services conducted a search at SERAP’s office in Abuja.
SERAP had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu to address the fuel price increase and investigate corruption allegations within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Failure to receive a response within the stipulated time frame would prompt SERAP to pursue legal action.
The organization highlighted the government’s duty to investigate corruption and uphold justice, citing constitutional mandates and international anti-corruption obligations. They pointed out the recent fuel price hike, linking it to reported supplier debt and subsequent price spikes.
Despite the DSS stating that the office search was a routine investigation, SERAP remains steadfast in its advocacy for good governance. They reiterated their commitment to using legal means to ensure accountability and transparency in Nigeria. The spokesperson emphasized SERAP’s determination to resist any attempts to stifle civil society voices.
