Former Peruvian president, Alberto Fujimori, dies aged 86

The former leader of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, who served 16 years in prison for crimes against humanity, passed away at the age of 86 in Lima, as confirmed by his family.

His children shared on social media that after battling cancer, Alberto Fujimori had passed away and they requested prayers for his soul.

Fujimori, who governed Peru from 1990 to 2000, was released from prison on compassionate grounds in December after serving a significant portion of his 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity.

Reports indicated a rapid decline in his health following treatment for mouth cancer in August.

Just before his passing, his daughter had mentioned his intention to run for president in 2026.

Fujimori, of Japanese descent, was imprisoned in 2009 for involvement in army-led massacres during his tenure, resulting in the deaths of 25 individuals.
