In recent reports, Benue State has confirmed four cases of monkeypox, with an additional 20 cases awaiting confirmation. The State Epidemiologist, Dr. Asema Msuega, shared this information during a recent discussion with journalists. Of the confirmed cases, three individuals have been treated and discharged, while the fourth case is currently under care in isolation and responding positively to treatment.
Regarding suspected cases, some patients have been advised to self-isolate at home, similar to protocols followed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The affected individuals are receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital’s isolation center.
The confirmed cases have been traced back to Makurdi and Gwer West Local Government Areas, while suspected cases have been identified in Ushongo, Kastina-Ala, Gboko, Makurdi, and Gwer West. Efforts are underway to raise awareness about monkeypox, emphasizing preventive measures like handwashing and avoiding unnecessary contact with potentially infected individuals.
Dr. Msuega highlighted the importance of early detection and prompt reporting of suspected cases to healthcare facilities to help contain the spread of the disease. Public education and awareness campaigns are being conducted to inform the community about the disease and necessary precautions.
