FG warns of impending flooding on Rivers Niger, Benue

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation has issued a warning about potential river flooding on the Niger and Benue rivers. He mentioned the significant volume of water flowing towards the Niger Delta region. During a press briefing in Abuja, the minister emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to address possible flooding in the southern part of the country.

He discussed the recent flooding in Maiduguri and Jere areas of Borno State, attributing it to water overflow from the Alau Dam caused by inflow from the Ngadda River. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s 2024 Annual Flood Outlook publication identified high flood risk areas, including several states like Borno, Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Yobe, Benue, and Gombe.

The minister stressed the increasing water levels in the Niger and Benue rivers, urging continued vigilance and preparedness. He mentioned the Presidential Committee’s report on preventing flood disasters, which recommended strategic areas and interventions. The President approved a significant amount for all states to address flooding issues.

In conclusion, the minister called on sub-national governments and stakeholders to heed early flood warnings, take preventive measures, and provide assistance to affected citizens during flood events.
