The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has issued a statement calling on governments to take proactive measures to prevent disasters like the recent flood in Maiduguri, Borno State. The President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, expressed concern over the devastating impact of the flood, which led to displacement, loss of lives, injuries, and extensive property damage in the area.
The Sultan urged the Federal Government to mobilize all resources to effectively manage the situation and alleviate the suffering of the affected individuals. While acknowledging the efforts of the federal and Borno State governments in responding to the crisis, he emphasized the need for further action, particularly by emergency management agencies and the North-East Development Commission.
Additionally, the council appealed to the private sector, organizations, local and international donors, and compassionate individuals to assist the people of Maiduguri by providing relief materials and services. The collective support and solidarity of all stakeholders were deemed crucial in alleviating the hardships caused by the flood disaster.
The statement conveyed the council’s sympathy to Governor Babagana Zulum, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Elkanemi, and the entire populace of the state, offering prayers for strength, recovery for the injured, and restoration for those who suffered losses.
